Double crochet (DC)
Double Crochet is one of the basic stitches in crochet. It adds more height to your row than Single or Halfdouble Crochet.
Instructions
Double Crochet (DC):
You now have three loops on your hook – place the yarn around your hook and pull through the first two loops.
You now have two loops on your hook – place the yarn around your hook again and pull through the two loops.
Decrease Double Crochet (DEC DC):
Place your yarn around the hook and pull through three loops.
Place your yarn around your hook and pull through the remaining two loops.
Increase Double Crochet (INC DC):
Sometimes especially when you’re working with bulky yarn or a larger than usual hook, the turning chain on a double crochet row leaves a gap at the beginning of the row. To get a neater edge, try chaining 2 instead of 3 stitches for the turning chain.
I often chain 2 for the turning chain and then not count it as a stitch. I will then work my first double crochet in the first stitch of a row. I find that this way diminishes the gap and still gives me a straight edge.
You can also work the chain row and first DC row as a Foundation Chain DC:
