Slip Knot

The slip knot is the foundational step in crochet, marking the start of almost every project. This simple loop forms the first stitch and is essential for creating a secure starting point. Whether you’re crocheting a cozy scarf or a delicate doily, the slip knot is where your journey begins.

Instructions

Step 1

Hold the yarn in your left hand, with the tail end on the right and the working end (attached to the skein) on the left.

Step 2

Form a loop by crossing the tail end over the working yarn. The tail end should be on top, forming an “X” shape.

Step 3

Slip your index finger and thumb under the loop, grasping the working yarn (the part that leads to the skein).

Step 4

Pull the working yarn through the loop, creating a new loop on top. As you pull, the original loop will tighten around the new loop.

Step 5

Gently tug on the tail end and the working yarn to tighten the loop around your crochet hook. Adjust the size of the loop so it sits comfortably on your hook without being too tight.

Step 6

Your slip knot is now secure, and you’re ready to begin your crochet project!

Next Steps for Beginners

1.: Chain Stitch (CH): The Chain Stitch is the most basic crochet stitch and is used to create the foundation for most projects. It’s the perfect next step after mastering the Slip Knot.

2.: Single Crochet (SC): The Single Crochet is the first solid stitch you’ll learn. It’s a simple stitch that’s great for building up your crochet fabric and is used in many beginner patterns.

With the Slip Knot mastered, you’re well on your way to exploring the creative world of crochet.
