Double Crochet (DC)

Double Crochet is one of the basic stitches in crochet. It adds more height to your row than Single or Halfdouble Crochet. Because of it’s height, the overall look of a project will be airy. The project will also feel looser than with the other two types of stitches. Make sure you are mindful of this, when crocheting stuffed items, as the filling may fall out.

increase double crochet
Increase Double Crochet (INC DC):
Work two Double Crochets in one stitch.
Sometimes especially when you’re working with bulky yarn or a larger than usual hook, the turning chain on a double crochet row leaves a gap at the beginning of the row. To get a neater edge, try chaining 2 instead of 3 stitches for the turning chain.
I often chain 2 for the turning chain and then not count it as a stitch. I will then work my first double crochet in the first stitch of a row. I find that this way diminishes the gap and still gives me a straight edge.
