Crocheted Poncho

Once upon a time I decided to crochet a blanket in granny squares. For some unknown reason it laid half-finished in the back of my closet. To this day I still do not know why I never finished it – the colours were beautiful and the yarn oh so soft.
My shame!
The unfinished blanket that lay away for so many years…
So as I was moving, I needed to clear out my stash – in it self a difficult task. I gave a lot of my yarn to a colleague, whose daughter had just learned how to make pompoms. Hearing how thrilled she was, really made me happy.
I just could not part with this yarn and luckily so, because it was perfect for a poncho too.

The Crocheted Poncho

I started off with the neck in crossed single crochet stitches, and as I had an uneven number of stitches it created a wonderful pattern. At the same time this technique also added to the texture of the poncho making it thicker and hence warmer.
I love colourblocking and I think the little rows of black between the raspberry red and the pale blue really make the colours pop.

The tricky part was how to add the holes for my arms. This crossed single crochet stitch can only be worked on the front side. Because of this working back and forth was impossible.. I ended up just cutting the yarn by the edge of each armhole. It did mean lots of ends being mended, but the final result definitely made up for it.

Besides mending ends by the armholes using an UFO also means a lot of extra end-mending. I had already but the yarn on the finished granny granny squares. This was a minor nuisance and now that I have finished, this part has already been forgotten.
So have a look in the back of your closet and check whether you may have a UFO lying around that could become a WIP and finally something useful.
