HOOKS

You cannot crochet without a hook, so I think it is essential to find one that works for you. Hooks come in many variations but first you need to decide on the material:
– Metal
– Wood
– Plastic
Metal and plastic hooks require no maintenance at all and they cannot break like wooden hooks, however I find wooden ones run smoother through the loops and you can find some with amazingly beautiful carvings.
My latest obsession is with Brittany Hooks – they look like wands and we are creating magic here – right??

The hooks are made of sustainably grown birch in California and they have not let me down yet.

Every once in awhile you can come across a wooden hook that shreds a little, however I normally just give it a few strokes with my nail file (not one made of metal, as it will tear the wood) and then it works perfectly again.

Ergonomically correct

None of us want to end up with crooked fingers, and luckily you can now buy ergonomic hooks. These are particularly great, when doing a project with a small sized hook. Due to the broad handle they are easier to hold – typically the hook itself will be made of metal and the handle can be in either three materials mentioned earlier. I believe that ergonomic hooks from Clover are wonderful to work with.

So… which do I choose?

You can choose to buy a simple hook that will function as a tool, however there are so many creative hook designers out there, so sometimes it can be fun to spend a little extra on a beautiful hook.

Being a new crocheter I would recommend finding a hook that has a broad handle – just till you get used to the movement throughout the project, but if a beautiful hook finds your fancy, please buy this, as it will just enhance your enjoyment.

What can also confuse a new crocheter is that there are US and metric size hooks – below I have listed the comparison between the two. There are many other sizes in metric but these are irrelevant at this point as they do not have a matching US size
